The massive shifts in how we do business are stretching the ability of organisations to maintain their values led, high performance cultures.

Many leaders I have spoken to are expressing their concerns around productivity, morale and culture. And rightly so… you can’t expect a system of values and behaviours designed for a pre-Covid world to be fit-for-purpose now.

When life changes, our purpose, values and priorities shift. In response, business leaders are asking how their purpose and business strategy should adapt… How do they create value for their stakeholders? How do they ensure their businesses are future-fit for this new world?

What’s particularly extraordinary to witness in the last couple of months, is the cultural transformation we’ve seen in companies in such a short space of time. Covid has overtaken our world with such force that companies have had to respond at pace. New ways of working and cultural shifts have taken place faster than ever before.

The recent Barrett Value Centre* Covid Culture Survey results, based on over 2 500 responses worldwide, highlights some interesting points:

  • There’s been a shift in focus from performance, control and hierarchy to being more people-focused, adaptable and collaborative.

  • Many of the top values experienced during Covid are now expected moving forward. These include adaptability, agility, teamwork, digital connectivity, a work / life balance and cross group collaboration.

Interestingly, the results did show up how different leaders and employees' priorities are. Leaders are looking for agility, innovation and sustainability, whilst employees are asking for clear direction, communication, more engagement and an environment of trust.

It is critical for senior leaders to listen to what their colleagues are saying

Without a doubt, it’s tough for leaders as they tackle the big unknown. Trying to support your team members collectively and individually, and create psychological safety to bring out the best in everyone, requires extraordinary leadership.

Tough times call for smart action
